“UV-resistant” and “UV-proof” sound like two grades of the same thing, and the second sounds like the better one. It is usually the weaker claim. One describes what the material is made of. The other describes something sprayed onto its surface — and a surface is exactly what the weather takes away first.

If you are buying a piece that will sit outdoors, this is the one specification worth reading properly. It decides whether the green you unpack is the green you still have in five summers, and it is not expensive to get right — it is just easy to get wrong, because the wrong option has the more reassuring name.

What the sun is actually doing

Sunlight is not one thing. The ultraviolet part of it divides into three bands, and only one of them is your problem. UVC, the most destructive, never reaches the ground — the atmosphere absorbs all of it. UVB gets through in small amounts; it is what burns skin. UVA is about 95 per cent of the ultraviolet light that reaches your garden, and it is the band that does the damage here.

UVA matters because of where it goes. It does not stop at the surface: it passes into the plastic and breaks the long molecular chains that hold the colour and the flex. That is why a failing piece does not fade evenly like a curtain. The green goes yellow in patches, leaf edges harden and crack while the middle still looks passable, and the surface takes on a chalky bloom that will not wash off. By the time it looks wrong from across the garden, the material has been coming apart for a season or two.

The whole difference, in one picture

A UV-resistant piece has its protection mixed into the resin before the leaf is formed. The stabilizers sit right through the thickness of the material, absorbing and dispersing UV wherever it lands.

A piece sold as UV-proof usually has a coating applied to the outside of a finished leaf. On the day it ships, it may well test better. But it is a layer, and layers weather: rain, grit, handling, thermal movement and the UV itself all work on it. Once it thins or breaks, whatever is underneath has no protection at all — and it has been sitting in the sun the whole time, waiting.

What it is worth in hours

Accelerated exposure testing puts a material under a UV lamp and counts the hours until the surface visibly changes. The spread across the plastics used in artificial foliage is not a few per cent. Ordinary imported polyethylene — which is what most cheap artificial foliage is — gives out somewhere between 200 and 500 hours. Cast vinyl does better, bottle-brush vinyl better still. Polyblend, a high-grade industrial polyethylene blend with the stabilizers compounded into the resin, ran 4,162 hours without noticeable change.

What that means in years, where you live

Lamp hours are a comparison, not a calendar. Outdoors, the answer depends on the sun you get. Under the severe UV of the Deep South and the Southwest, outdoor Polyblend foliage stays intact three to five years. In northern climates seven years is normal, and plenty of northern installations still look right well past that.

Aspect matters as much as latitude. A shaded north wall in Phoenix can outlast an unshaded south-facing terrace in Boston. If the piece will take direct afternoon sun all summer, assume the shorter end of whatever range applies to you.

How to tell which one you are being sold

  • Ask where the protection sits. “Compounded into the resin” or “UV stabilizers in the material” is the answer you want. “UV coating” or “treated surface” is the other one.
  • Ask what the base plastic is. If nobody will name it, assume it is the cheapest one.
  • Ask for an exposure figure, not an adjective. A number in hours can be compared. “Fade resistant” cannot.
  • Check whether the warranty mentions colour. Plenty of warranties cover the frame and say nothing about the foliage, which is the part the sun attacks.
  • Be suspicious of “proof” on anything that lives outside. No pigmented plastic is genuinely immune to UV. Every honest supplier is selling you a rate of change, not an exemption from it.

All pigmented plastic shifts colour a little as it ages. With light-fast pigments the change is slow and stays well below what the eye objects to, which is why pigment quality matters nearly as much as the resin. That is the honest version, and it is the one worth buying on.
