Why choose artificial boxwood balls
Boxwood balls, topiary balls, boxwood spheres, round boxwood: they all mean the same simple shape, and it works almost anywhere. A ball looks right in a window box, in a big planter on a terrace, or in a bowl on a dining table. The rows below go by size and by spot, because that is how the choice usually gets made.
Small boxwood balls for window boxes
The 10, 12 and 15 in traditional boxwood balls are the full outdoor grade, so they can sit in a sunny window box all year. If you are replacing the 14 in ball sold in many craft stores, our 12 and 15 in sizes sit either side of it.
Buying a row? Put every ball in one order. The green can vary slightly between dye batches, and one ball a shade off stands out in a line. These three sizes go straight in the cart.
Large topiary balls for big planters
A big planter needs a big ball; a small one set in it looks lost. The UV boxwood ball runs up to 42 in across and is the full outdoor grade, made for sun all year.
The 30 and 42 in sizes come in two sections that fit together and travel by truck, while the 20 and 24 in go by parcel. The 36 in UV ball is a different piece, the lighter grade, for part shade. It looks almost the same. Ask us which one you are looking at.
Cedar balls and other foliage
Boxwood is not the only round topiary. The cedar balls, in 18 and 24 in, have a softer, feathery texture that sits well against stone and dark paint. They come on a steel pipe, ready to set into a pot.
Both are the lighter UV grade, so give them part shade or use them for the season. For a different leaf again, ask about the needle point ivy ball and the podocarpus ball. Choosing an artificial boxwood ball covers size and mounting.
Small balls for indoor tables and shelves
Indoors, a small ball does the work of a vase of flowers and never needs changing. Set one in a low bowl on a dining table, or put a pair on a mantel or a bookshelf.
The 6 in cedar ball and the podocarpus ball are made for indoors. Keep them out of sunny windows. Ordinary glass lets through the UV that fades plastic foliage. Send us a photo of the table or shelf and we will suggest a size.
Questions about Artificial Topiary Balls
Do artificial topiary balls fade outdoors?
Slowly on the full outdoor grade, faster on the lighter one. Keep the lighter grade in part shade and keep indoor balls inside. Our page on how to prevent fading covers cleaning and what shortens a ball’s life outdoors.
What size artificial ball should I buy?
For a pair either side of a door, 16 to 24 inches usually reads best. A lobby or terrace piece starts around 30. Sizes here run 6 to 42 inches, and you can send a photograph of the space if you want a second opinion before ordering.
Will a ball fit a planter I already own?
Yes. Most balls come without a container, so they drop into what you have. Send us the planter dimensions and we will tell you which diameter sits right in it.
Can I get a matching pair, or a set?
Yes. Pairs and sets are the most common order. Buy them together: the color can vary slightly from one production batch to the next, so a second pair bought later may not match the first exactly.
What is the difference between these and preserved spheres?
Artificial balls are plastic foliage, and the outdoor grades can go outside. Preserved balls are real foliage kept soft with glycerin; they stay indoors, out of direct sun and rain. See preserved ball topiary.
