Description

This spiral is cut from a single living Green Beauty boxwood, 9 feet tall and 5 feet across at the base, with the twist running the full height of the plant.

At that scale it does the work of a small tree. A pair flanks a driveway entrance, a front gate or a front door; one on its own marks the turn of a formal walk or holds a courtyard where a hedge would block the view. It is a living plant, grown on and clipped into shape over years, not a preserved or artificial form.

Green Beauty is hardy in USDA zones 5 through 9 and handles heat, humidity and drought better than English boxwood. Give it full sun to part shade and well-drained soil, neutral to slightly acidic; it will not tolerate soggy roots. Water when the top 2 to 3 inches of soil are dry, deeply and regularly through the first year or two while it roots in. The spiral keeps its outline with light trimming two or three times a year, best done after the last spring frost. Watch for boxwood leaf miner and for mites in full sun; Green Beauty has good resistance to boxwood blight.

A plant this size travels by LTL truck freight, and the piece and its delivery are quoted together.

Hardy in USDA zones 6 to 9: the green areas. Enter your ZIP above and we mark your spot.

Potted outdoors? Roots in a pot get about one zone colder in winter than roots in the ground, so choose a plant rated one zone colder than yours, or move the pot somewhere sheltered for the hard freezes.

  • Outside its range: winters too cold for it, or too warm

Simplified from the 2023 USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map at ZIP-code level: unofficial, contiguous US only. Zones describe average winter lows; a sheltered courtyard or an exposed ridge can sit a zone either side. Which boxwood for which zone →
