A mossed horse topiary gives you the animal without the stable. What ships is a hand-made steel wire frame in the shape of a standing horse, powder coated, packed with pre-dyed sphagnum moss, and set on two flat foot plates that rest on grass, gravel or paving without fixing.
This is the 17-inch horse, a piece for a planted bed, an entrance, a terrace or an event table rather than a lawn centrepiece. At that size the outline still reads as a horse from across a room, which is what the moss surface is doing: it holds shadow the way a coat does and stops the shape looking like bare wire.
The moss is a growing medium as much as a finish. Left alone it stays a dark, slightly shaggy green. Planted, small trailing plants root straight into it, so it then wants regular watering and shelter from hard afternoon sun. Every frame is made by hand, so dimensions are approximate and no two come out quite the same.
