One bale, 46 pounds, 5.5 cubic feet, compressed and wire-banded so it ships as a solid block. This is the natural sphagnum sprayed green, which is where the even colour in the photograph comes from.
It does two jobs. Stuffing a new wire frame is the first: the moss is packed in by hand until the shape fills out and the wire holds it. The second is repair. Moss on a piece that has been outside thins, browns and opens up at the seams, and a bale is what you re-skin it with.
Sphagnum holds up to 20 times its weight in water, so once a frame is stuffed it stays damp for a long stretch, and plants can root straight into it and grow out over the wire.
