Real boxwood, grown and shaped.

Live boxwood ball topiary is a real plant clipped to a sphere — it grows, it needs light and water, and it rewards that with the density no manufactured foliage quite matches. These are grown and shaped rather than bought in and resold.

Twenty-three forms here from $155: single balls, balls on a stem, and double and triple tiers, 15 to 84 inches. Every piece ships with care guidance, and the tall tiered forms travel by freight, quoted with the piece.

What sizes do live boxwood balls come in?

From compact 24-inch globes to 80-inch ball-on-stem specimens — a range wide enough that homeowners, designers and commercial buyers all find their scale here. Every plant is grown for foliage density and hand-trimmed to hold a true sphere.

Where do ball topiaries work best?

  • Paired at an entrance — the classic, and still the best first impression a door can buy
  • Marking a path or bed — repetition of one clean shape reads as design, not planting
  • In containers — with drainage and winter attention, a ball lives happily potted for years

How do I keep the sphere crisp?

Little and often: light trims through the season, the main shaping in early June, and the feeding calendar in the receiving FAQ. Balls are the most forgiving shape in the trade — a cautious trim cannot ruin one.

What arrives in the box?

A mature, container-grown plant with an established root system — typically 5 to 10 years old, because a dense true sphere cannot be rushed. Smaller globes ship UPS in custom boxes; the 80-inch specimens travel by freight. First-day care and the feeding calendar are in the receiving FAQ.

Questions about live boxwood balls

How much light does a live boxwood ball need?

Live boxwood balls want bright light — full sun to part shade outdoors. Indoors they struggle without a genuinely bright spot, which is when preserved or artificial is the better answer rather than a plant that slowly declines.

How often do they need trimming?

A light trim once or twice in the growing season holds the shape; the week of June 1 is our own rule of thumb, so new growth covers the cuts by mid-August. True boxwood enthusiasts pluck by hand rather than shear.

Will they survive winter outside?

In the ground, in their hardiness zone, yes. In a container they are more vulnerable, because the roots sit above the frost line — container boxwood needs watering into winter and shelter from southwest sun, which is what causes bronzing.

What is a ball on a stem?

A ball on a stem is a sphere clipped on a clear single trunk, so it reads as a small tree. Double and triple forms stack two or three spheres up the same stem.

Do you ship live plants?

We ship live boxwood across the US and Canada. Smaller pieces travel by UPS; the tall tiered forms go by freight and are quoted with delivery.
