How to Add Moss to a Topiary Frame

Mossing a frame is the most satisfying hour in topiary. It is also easy to do badly — loose moss slumps within a season. Here is how we pack ours, and exactly how much moss to buy.

How much moss you need

Nobody publishes this, so we will. One cubic foot of sphagnum moss fills:

  • 8–10 mini frames (under 10 inches)
  • 3–4 small frames (10–14 inches)
  • 1 medium frame (14–24 inches)

Large frames of 24–36 inches take at least two cubic feet each. Buy the moss and green colorant from our topiary supplies.

Step 1: loosen and dampen

Pull the moss fibers apart with your hands and mist them with water. Damp moss is flexible and packs into corners; dry moss fights you and springs back.

Step 2: pack it hard

Pack hard with the dowel, then trim the silhouette.

Stuff the damp moss into the frame firmly — much more firmly than feels polite. When you press the packed moss you should not be able to push a finger in. A wooden dowel drives moss into ears, tails and the other tight details. Keep going until there are no voids anywhere.

Step 3: trim the silhouette

Stray fibers will stick out everywhere. Scissor them back following the lines of the frame, cutting close without digging into the packed body. Cut too far? Push a little more moss in with the dowel and trim again.

Step 4: keep it looking fresh

Moss is the soil of the topiary, not a living surface. Refresh it once or twice a year by working new moss in with the old, or plant it — ivy or creeping fig rooted into the moss within the first six months will take, and after that the plant keeps the piece green. Left alone too long, sphagnum dries past saving; if you would rather never think about it, a piece covered in UV-rated outdoor boxwood is the zero-maintenance answer.

Planting into the mossed frame is its own craft: the step-by-step is in how to make an animal topiary. Prefer it done for you? Every mossed animal in the mossed collection arrives packed exactly this way.
