Vaccinium ovatum

Vaccinium ovatum

Here in Oregon we call this native our evergreen huckleberry. Vaccinium ovatum is a familiar shrub in the Coastal Range and the Western Cascades. Although it is associated with moister areas, it is surprisingly drought tolerant once established. The form we offer has not reached four feet in height in 5 years. Its glossy, thick leaves are dark green when mature and finely serrated along their edges. An ideal candidate for adding to moss animal topiaries. New growth which continues on and off through out the season is bronze to red and is especially attractive in cooler months. The bell shaped white flowers have their first major flush in late spring and early summer but the shrub continues to bloom and bear fruit through out the summer and fall if given adequate water. The tiny dark fruits are sweet and edible even if they are time consuming to gather. Wild life has no trouble finding them. Seasonality is Late spring to early summer and later. Measurements are around 5 feet x 4 feet Colors are White flowers Hardiness Zones: 6, 7, 8
