Clematis Mrs. Robert Brydon

The history of Clematis Mrs. Robert Brydon reminds us that many of the plants that we grow in our gardens have been inch found inch by gardeners. In this case, in 1935, the gardener for Elizabeth Prentiss of Cleveland, Ohio, found this cross between C .heracleifolia var. davidiana, a species from China, and our North American native, C. virginiana. It was named for the gardener s wife. This big herbaceous clematis has managed to remain in the trade ever since. One of the reasons for its popularity is the fact that it blooms for an extended period of time. An ideal candidate for adding to moss animal topiaries. Individual flowers are small but are borne in great profusion near the terminals of the stem. Each flower has four or five sepals that are curled back to expose prominent stamens. Because it does not climb, we have found it useful in large containers where we let it spill dramatically to the ground. We have also used it to cover gentle inclines and to hide stumps. This summer bloomer has it main crop on the current year's growth. Prune this back hard at the end of winter to encourage new growth. Seasonality is Mid summer to mid autumn. Measurements are around 6 to 8 feet Colors are Pale Blue flowers Hardiness Zones: 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9
